This week we had our very first guest on the show, Mark Spencer of Spencer Apiaries. He was kind and patient and answered all our questions, and some of yours, too!
We covered time requirements for beekeeping, how much land you need, and the possibility of both urban beekeeping and tending bees if you have an allergy to their venom.
Varroa destructor, the mite that is devastating honeybee populations. (Aside, ever since Mark said that the size of these mites in relation to bees would be analogous to us having a parasite the size of a dinner plate stuck to us, I have had nightmares. Thanks, Mark.)
Tattoo addiction– it’s a real thing!
Neonicotinoid pesticides, another factor cited in the decline in honeybee populations.
Sources for beekeeping supplies, recommended by Mark:
While Wicker Man was a terrible movie that never should have been remade, and the Nicholas Cage remake stripped the only interesting theme from the original, I’m still including the bee clip, because this is pretty much how I envision the beekeeping shaking out over here.
